Initial Care and Wellness Care—What’s the Difference?

by Oasis Wellness Partners on June 2, 2020       Oasis Wellness Partners

We at Chiropractic Family Wellness Center have been in practice in Scarborough, Maine for 29 years, and we have been asked over and over—what is the difference between Initial Care and Wellness Care? Well, let us explain….

Initial Care provides initial, temporary alleviation of your symptoms or pain. This typically occurs when inflammation is decreased and joint function restored through a spinal adjustment. Initial care is the first phase of what we hope is a lifetime of attending to the needs and well-being of your body. In many cases, there is trauma to the soft tissue which requires healing and strengthening. Out of whack muscle patterns consisting of weak or tight muscles also need to be addressed for lasting results. These conditions are often due to poor posture or injury, and often, pain.

Initial Care is more intensive and frequent (some people’s care plans have them coming 3 times for a few weeks, then 2 times, then once a week) because it addresses the trauma and out of whack muscle patterns described above. Some considerations in the length of this treatment are the condition and integrity of the spinal column, the age and physical condition of the patient, the severity of the injury and the duration of the problem. We often recommend massage along with initial care in order to address the soft muscle tissue problems that usually accompany this initial phase of care.

Wellness Care is the sustained stage of care that ensures that the health of the spine is being sustained and supported. Because daily activities put a strain on our bodies, we must continue to monitor the health and condition of your spine through periodic evaluations and regular chiropractic adjustments. This will help insure you are living at your highest level of health and functioning optimally.

The benefits of wellness care are that minor misalignments can be discovered before they become symptomatic or take hold. Wellness chiropractic care allows for better posture, enhanced function, improved athletic performance, less injuries and an overall healthier and happier lifestyle. This type of preventative or wellness care can also save you time and money by keeping minor problems from becoming more serious.

When you start as a practice member at Chiropractic Family Wellness Center, you begin in Initial Care, and upon completion of Initial Care, move on to Wellness Care. We have some practice members that have been coming to us our entire history of practice! Our practice members find that when they take care of their spines by having regular chiropractic adjustments, their immunity is stronger, their energy is increased, and they are more able to do the things they love and live their best lives.
