Health Care Vs. Sick Care

by Oasis Wellness Partners on May 5, 2020       Oasis Wellness Partners

There has never been a time where health has mattered more than right now. However, a lot of Americans think that by having health insurance, they are protecting themselves from sickness. But the medical model of care isn’t health care-it’s sick care. At Chiropractic Family Wellness Center in Scarborough, Maine, we specialize in actual health care, which we call wellness care. Let us explain the difference.

Wellness care is regular treatment that seeks to activate the natural healing ability. We don’t add anything to the body, instead, we remove anything that might interfere with normal function, because we trust that the body knows what to do as long as nothing interferes with it.

Sick care, on the other hand, seeks to treat a symptom by adding something from the outside: for example, a medication, surgery or other invasive procedure. If a patient has high blood pressure, for example, the standard medical approach would be to find a medication that lowers blood pressure and have the patient take this medication indefinitely. Now, while this may lower blood pressure, it ignores the underlying cause that is making the blood pressure high and also could cause side effects further complicating the person’s recovery: such as depression, weight gain, diabetes, heart failure, fatigue, and dizziness. So while your blood pressure may be lower, you now have a host of other health problems to deal with.

Treat the Causes Rather Than Symptoms

Whether it’s a nutritional issue, faulty nervous system control, or a manifestation of stress, medication could decrease the blood pressure, leaving the root problem causing the symptom of high blood pressure unaddressed. While we agree that you should absolutely see doctors and follow their guidelines, we also believe you should become your own advocate and learn how you can make lifestyle choices that may eradicate the need for medication altogether. A lifestyle like that could be eating a healthy diet, moderate exercise daily, getting regular chiropractic adjustments, staying hydrated, removing chemicals from your home, practicing mindfulness, and other healthy choices. You are worth it.
